What the day feels like

Descend deep underground into Slănic Prahova, one of the largest salt mines in Europe, where carved salt halls rise around you like an underground cathedral. Many visitors come just to breathe: the cool, salt-rich air down here is famously pure, and people find it wonderfully calming.

Back in the daylight it is village Romania at its gentlest — a slow wander through Slănic with time for a relaxed local lunch. Cool underground even in high summer, easy at any age, and the most surprising day trip you can make from Bucharest. (Mine admission, about €9, is paid on site.)
